Blessing Sanyanga – “Blueprint Exhibition”
At the Courtyard Gallery, 8 Main Street Midleton - May
17th – 30th
Artist’s Statement:
-
“I
am delighted to present Blueprint, an exhibition of sea life sculptures
in Italian marble, Irish limestone and bog-oak.
The idea the exhibition stems
from the influence that the sea has had on my work over the last eleven years.
The transition from Zimbabwe, a land-locked country to Ireland, an island
surrounded by the sea has caused a gradual change in both my choice of subject
matter and the progression in my style of work. Our surroundings are an
integral source of ideas and this is definitely true for Blueprint. Whether
we like it or not, all creation is inspired by nature.
As human beings we are
connected to the sea, using her resources, power and nature for our benefit.
Ireland has a particularly strong connection to the sea and a rich heritage of
seafaring people. I have enjoyed time getting to know the coast of Ireland and
exploring the sea and its dominant nature on the landscape, culture and music
of Ireland.
Each of the sculptures has a
story to tell. The shark, master of the ocean, powerfully swishes through the
sea, confident that he has been engineered by nature to a more sophisticated
extent than humans could ever attempt. The mermaid, mythical temptress of the
sea sings out an enchanting song from the shore.
I pay great attention to the
selection of each stone and strive to find stones with individual character and
personality. My father used to remind me, “Choose a stone that talks to you, a
stone you can see through.” Each sculpture is a one-off and is made by working
straight into the stone, without models or sketches. I place more emphasis on
using imagination as a tool to visualize the piece. My fascination with natural
shapes and details has led me to recognise bog oak as a suitable material to
diversify the scope of my creations.
Featured in the collection are
a penguin, stingray, octopus, shark, dolphins, turtle, mermaid, seagull,
seahorse and fishbone. They range in size from height 25cm x width 10cm to
height 65cm x width 85cm.
I invite you to join me this
summer for this celebration of the sea. It’s high time we showed respect for
our higher power, Mother Nature.
Blessing
Sanyanga, May 2013.

Exhibition
by Artist Steven Ward at the Courtyard Gallery Midleton
April
25th – May 8th
About
the Artist
“Painting for me is like an emotional journey of colour and
light transferred onto a blank canvas. I paint quickly and vigorously to start
with, to cover the canvas in the basic tones I need, then some detail is added
to pull the overall composition together. It is important for me not to lose
the sense of emotion and life created by the sea sky and landscape. Bold
application of colour through brush strokes, palette knife and fingers is
essential for creating the feeling I want to convey.
Approximately four years ago, while taking my father to a
water colour class in Connemara, I decided to sit the class with him. This is
what sparked my interest in landscape painting. Since then I have dabbled in
water colours, but not until I attended oil painting classes with renowned
artist Philip Gray, did I discover the sheer pleasure and raft of emotion that
comes from painting in oils. The last fourteen months under Philip’s guidance
has been an amazing journey and has helped me develop my own style while
painting with sheer abandon.
This collection depicts the journey I have been on since
starting with Philip, which I hope you will enjoy as much as I have.
There are some commissions which I have sold included in
this collection. Please feel free to talk to Ann at the gallery if you’re
interested in a commission.”

The Courtyard Gallery
in Midleton, County Cork, will host an exhibition of 33 etchings by Doolin
artist Corinna Schroeder-vFrihling. The exhibition will run from Friday, 28
September through Wednesday, 10 October 2012.
Rather than adhere to
a rigid theme, these etchings are a diffuse collection of landscapes,
dreamscapes, and studies of a variety of engaging subjects. The exhibition’s
title ‘Some Thoughts’ are an indication of its flowing and eclectic nature.
The pieces selected
for this exhibition represent a sampling of Corinna’s etchings and colour
etchings created over the better part of a decade. Her art is based on reality
but often veers enticingly towards surrealism.
‘In my etchings I like to connect things that may not normally be
connected,’ Corinna says. ‘When put together they tell their own story.’
Although Corinna is
of German origin, she has lived for 15 years in Doolin, County Clare, where she
works from her own printing studio. Her work has been shown in many solo and
group exhibitions in Germany, France, Belgium, Norway, Ireland, Canada and
Bulgaria, and her prints can be found in The Americas Biennial Exhibition
research archives in the United States.
She has won several
awards in Germany and her prints have appeared in German art books and in
several exhibition catalogues in Europe. In 2011 she published a book combining
woodengravings and poetry titled ‘APHORISMS’.
Together with her
late husband, Walter, Corinna ran a painting and printing school in Northern
Germany from 1972–1998 and an international studio gallery from 1989–1998, in
which they exhibited noted artists from Germany, Poland, Italy and Ireland.
From the initial idea for an etching to the final hand printing, Corinna
does all the work in her studio, working on copper and zinc with several
different engraving tools for dry point and mezzotint and for etchings with
aquatint, crayon, soap ground, verni mou and acid. The process is intricate and
time consuming, with a print sometimes taking many hours to complete and an
etching many days.
No photographic or digital process is involved. And she doesn’t print
editions. Each print is a unique, original print, she explains. Details such as
the choice of paper and the colour arrangements will differ, each creating a special
mood in the printmaker and in the viewer.
‘Etching, painting,
drawing are my ways to let other people take part in my feelings and visions of
the world,’ Corinna says. ‘I think myself a kind of visual story teller’.

Exhibition of new work by Blessing Sanyanga & Peter Doe Wear
At The Courtyard Gallery, Midleton. From July 12th – 25th
“ART IN TRANSIT” is an exhibition of Sculptures and Paintings from two African self taught artists based in cork for the past years. The exhibition will be officially launched on Friday 13th July from 6.30pm – 8pm. Everybody welcome to attend.
Blessing Sanyanga's inspiration comes from day to day life, dreams, imagination and the stones themselves. His sculptures are filled with human culture, wildlife, nature and feelings. These sculptures are all hand carved using chisels and hammers, chasseing combs, files and rasps, smoothed with six to fifteen water sand papers of different textures, then fired to a moderate temperature, waxed and polished for durability and to expose the natural colours that you see when stones are wet. All Blessing’s sculptures are original and one offs. He works straight into the stone without having to do a model first. Only a number of sculptures that he makes are created from sketches.
In this exhibition Blessing has worked on a variety of stone namely, green opal, verdite, limestone, beach rocks. Since he moved from the Stephen Pearce gallery, he was based Cork city where he rented a studio at Camden palace hotel for 1 year and he is now based at Backwater Artist Group Cork city, where he is currently creating his new work.
Blessing Sanyanga is currently a finalist in the RDS National Crafts competition and his work has been selected for exhibition in the RDS Concert Hall, Dublin.
Peter Doe Wear is a talented artist specialising in paintings. He works on drawings and images of daily life. Most of his paintings are created from his imagination, which he says gives him more freedom to express himself. As a music man he likes painting musicians, mostly African instrumentalists. In his words he says “It comes natural, and Africa is engraved in his memory. I do not need to look at photographs to have the inspiration but it flows with the paint on the brush onto canvas.” Peter is well known for his landscapes and seascapes which range in vibrant colours and energy. Most of his work is in private collections.
Don’t miss the opportunity to view this exciting exhibition at The Courtyard Gallery from July 12th -25th.

At The Courtyard Gallery, 8 Main Street, Midleton May 25th – June 7th 2012
Following his successful solo exhibition in 2009 at the Courtyard Gallery, Ray Lande, a native of Bishopstown, will show his new collection of art at The Courtyard from May 25th – June 7th.
Since studying art at both Scoil Stiofain Naofa and the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork, Ray has participated in exhibitions in various locations around Cork. ” Journey Home is Raymond’s third solo exhibition at the Courtyard Gallery. His previous exhibitions here attracted a great deal of attention, and no doubt his current work will draw a similar response.
“In life we tend to make many journeys, but usually such journeys eventually lead us back to where we came from, back home. We return for example, from our daily travels, or occasionally it may be from a more distant place, or perhaps in some cases a journey home, after a spell in hospital. Such examples are of course physical, there are also one could say, journeys that we make of a more inner, personal nature. Like the long road from loneliness, to finding refuge in a friend or lover.
From the point of view of an artist, the journey from a blank sheet or a blank canvas to a completed work of art can be a long one. I invite you to explore through my work the many journeys home that I have made, since my last solo exhibition in 2009”. Ray’s exhibition, a Journey Home will be officially launched on Saturday May 26th at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

ART EXHIBITION - CHARLIE MAHON - 11TH - 24TH OF MAY 2012 -' Renowned Irish ceramic artist Charlie Mahon brings his riotous charactersand mediterranean colours into paint.'
VENUS & FURS
In The Courtyard Gallery in Midleton, CountyCork, on Friday the 11th of May till Thursday the 24th, Charlie Mahon will present an exhibition of paintings and ceramics.Venus & Fursis the culmination of several years work. While Charlie continues to work in ceramics ( he is a featured artist in John Goode's recent book, The Best Of Irish Ceramic Sculpture), painting has become a strong point of focus. What started as small scale paintings, purely as a means to explore colour, has developed into large scale works." ..the paintings began to take on a life of their own."This exhibition will be the first time all the paintings, from this period, will all be seen together.
In the title painting from Venus & Furs, a woman in an operatically vibrant red dress, reclines back into a sea of highly patterned and decorative material.A small dog sits to attention, at her feet." ..these paintings have a dual aspect. There is the effect of the colour work and there is, also, the risqué element at play in the scenes - which is wide open to the viewer's interpretation."
Figures and animals have featured in Charlie'swork from the beginning.Venus & Furs is a continuation of these themes.Strong colours have also been a long standing feature.Charlie can trace the influence of colour in his work from when he studied ceramics in Mississippi, USA, in the late 1980's." The colours there, particularly in New Orleans were so intense that they have had a definite impact on my work. Also, it was while I was at college there that I first became aware of painted wood carvings ( of german expressionistic origin), which hugely impressed me.In Venus & Furs, I have been putting the colour glazes, that I have put on my ceramic works, onto the paintings, which are on wooden boards, and I think I am beginning to achieve something close to what initially inspired me to make art."
The exhibition will be officially launched on Friday the 11th of May at 7.00pm and all are welcome to attend.

EXHIBITION – ANNE McLEOD – 28th Oct – 10th November.
At The Courtyard Exhibition Centre, 8 Main Street, Midleton.
Anne McLeod hails from the English Lake District but has been resident in Ireland for most of the last 28 years. After an academic training in languages, she began painting professionally 19 years ago in Australia where the extraordinary effects of light and shade stirred a painterly instinct in her.
Back in Wexford since 1991, she has exhibited regularly both locally and nationally and has won a number of awards for her work. She teaches several very popular watercolour classes and gives occasional one-day workshops. Anne is also an award winning member of the Watercolour Society of Ireland. Her work is in private and corporate collections worldwide.
Anne paints primarily flowers, landscapes and the more modest of our domestic and farm animals: cats, cows, hens, sheep and donkeys. Whatever the subject though, she takes particular pleasure in showing how light and shade breathe life into the visual world. All her work is representational but, especially in her close-up paintings she shows the abstract beauty of the forms and colours. Anne employs a depth of colour which is unusual in watercolour painting and likes her darks to be truly dark so that the light shines out by contrast.
Anne will show her new collection of work at The Courtyard Gallery Midleton from Oct 28th – Nov 10th.This exhibition is certainly not to be missed. The official launch of Anne’s new work will take place at the Courtyard Gallery on Sat 29th Oct and all are welcome to attend.
Open Tues – Sat 10.am – 5.30pm. Closed for lunch1.30 – 2pm. Tel No. 021 4634644
Exhibition by Sinead Redmond entitled “Colourful Explorations”
At The Courtyard Gallery, Midleton From 14th – 27th October
Sinead is a local Contemporary Artist, originally from Dublin, she has been living in Midleton since 2001.
“I love to use lashings of thick colourful paint.Colour, contrast and texture excite the painting process.Sometimes pensive, often spontaneous, I paint from the heart whilst attempting to bring some sense of order to the exploration of emotion expressed on the canvas.
In my paintings I explore the beauty of colour and texture through the medium of oil and the use of a pallet knife.Much of my work is created through a technique known as “impasto”.
The joy of using the pallet knife is that it enables me to connect with and almost sculpt and mould the paint onto the canvas.
I developed a love of art from an early age and studied art and art history at school.I have always enjoyed exploring new mediums and in more recent years have experimented with pottery, mosaic making, wood carving, papier maché, charcoal, oil pastel and acrylic.I find however that I always seem to return to my first love - oil paint.
I always have a painting in my head that I can’t wait to get on canvas. This is my first exhibition and I hope it will be the first of many.”
Take time to visit the Courtyard Gallery and view new works by Sinead.

PREVIOUSLY ‘trace’
an exhibition of drawings, paintings and prints
by Judy O’Sullivan at The Courtyard Gallery, Midleton, Co. Cork
16 – 29 September 2011, Tues – Sat10-1.30 and 2-5.30pm.Admission free
The exhibition will be formally opened by
Clare Hennessy, Director Cork Printmakers on Saturday 17th September at 2.30 pm (All welcome)
In her new work Judy O’Sullivan is experimenting with drawing processes, extending boundaries through photography and print. She focuses on familiar surroundings, a chair, a window, a shadow on a wall, something the cat brings in, footprints in mud, the patterns in hedgerows. These are the marks of everyday life, often unnoticed, to which we give little attention.
A central aspect in the making of the work was exploring the Japanese idea, ‘mono no aware’, literally ‘the pathos of things’, the awareness of their impermanence and transience and wistfulness their passing.
‘The work grew from my reflections on different aspects of my mother’s life. I tried to make use of her gift for always seeing wonder in the small, the ordinary and everyday. She kept for me things other people might have thrown out, knowing I might find magic in an old piece of lace or fabric, a feather or things that held memories.
Making a drawing holds onto the momentary experience, freezing the moment. The drawing holds our reflections and feelings making something concrete of the encounter with the object.’
Clare based artist Judy O’Sullivan grew up in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork and is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and UCC.She has exhibited regularly in solo and selected group exhibitions over the last ten years including Tallaght Community Arts Centre, Dublin; CorkArtTrail; Beara Arts Festival; Iontas at SligoArtGallery; Glór Centre, Ennis, Co Clare; Clare Co Council Offices; Wicklow Co. Council Offices. Her work was shown in an Bhoireann the international exhibition 2006 at Galerie Pomie, Baladou, France.Dress Drawings 2009,which included a large wall drawing and media installation was selected to show at the Courthouse Gallery and Studios, Co Clare.

Reading, Rivers, Dreaming Born in London of Irish parents, Jackie Edwards has lived in Rosslare, Co Wexford, for over 30 years. She attended Dun Laoghaire School of Art and has held 25 exhibitions to date.
Although she paints a wide range of subjects, she focuses mainly on figurative work and portraiture, often strong imagery using oil and egg tempera as her main medium.
The use of egg tempera and oil lends itself to a technique called The” Mische Technique”. This process uses layers of thin oil glazes which allow light though the opaque cross hatching of the tempera, resulting in an illuminated quality to the finished piece. Jackie will be furthering her studies this August in Austria under the Master Artist, Professor Phillip Rubinov Jacobson.
This exhibition features figurative and natural images that have created an impact on Jackie from the dark to lighter side of life.
The exhibition runs from Friday 25th June to Thursday 8th July.

"Carousels and Nature" en exhibition by Claire Smyth, Carmel Smyth and Tina Shee Cappieri 19th to 31st March 2010
Two painters and a batik artist present their joint exhibition at The Courtyard from 19th to 31st March. Tina Shee Cappieri and Clare Smyth are both graduates of the CrawfordCollege of art, who have specialized in painting. Tina’s most recent series of paintings has as its subject merry-go-rounds, to suggest the manner in which our lives often seem to go round in circles, with problems constantly repeating until we take action to resolve them. Look out for the moment of rebellion from a horse on the carousel.
Clare works mostly in watercolour, with her major source of inspiration coming from the colours, texture and light of her natural environment.
Carmel Smyth works in batik, a process involving hot wax on cloth, which is dyed several times to build up colours. She draws inspiration from the ever changing landscape. Carmel has exhibited frequently, and also taught batik to primary and secondary school children.
19th February to 8th March: "Look and See"
Opening on February 19th at 7.30 p.m. will be an exhibition by four Cork artists to watch out for: Laura Healy, Maeve Hickey, Helen O’Keeffe and Rebecca Wall. Currently in their final year at the Crawford College of Art and Design, they have joined forces to present “Look and See”,a dynamic exhibition of paintings. Part of their mission is to “reinterpret ‘real space’ in order to challenge our natural judgement in negotiating spatial relationships in environments we occupy”. Other inspirations are childhood memories, and emotional responses to colour
