EXHIBITION – ANNE McLEOD – 28th Oct – 10th November.
At The Courtyard Exhibition Centre, 8 Main Street, Midleton.
Anne McLeod hails from the English Lake District but has been resident in Ireland for most of the last 28 years. After an academic training in languages, she began painting professionally 19 years ago in Australia where the extraordinary effects of light and shade stirred a painterly instinct in her.
Back in Wexford since 1991, she has exhibited regularly both locally and nationally and has won a number of awards for her work. She teaches several very popular watercolour classes and gives occasional one-day workshops. Anne is also an award winning member of the Watercolour Society of Ireland. Her work is in private and corporate collections worldwide.
Anne paints primarily flowers, landscapes and the more modest of our domestic and farm animals: cats, cows, hens, sheep and donkeys. Whatever the subject though, she takes particular pleasure in showing how light and shade breathe life into the visual world. All her work is representational but, especially in her close-up paintings she shows the abstract beauty of the forms and colours. Anne employs a depth of colour which is unusual in watercolour painting and likes her darks to be truly dark so that the light shines out by contrast.
Anne will show her new collection of work at The Courtyard Gallery Midleton from Oct 28th – Nov 10th.This exhibition is certainly not to be missed. The official launch of Anne’s new work will take place at the Courtyard Gallery on Sat 29th Oct and all are welcome to attend.
Open Tues – Sat 10.am – 5.30pm. Closed for lunch1.30 – 2pm. Tel No. 021 4634644
Exhibition by Sinead Redmond entitled “Colourful Explorations”
At The Courtyard Gallery, Midleton From 14th – 27th October
Sinead is a local Contemporary Artist, originally from Dublin, she has been living in Midleton since 2001.
“I love to use lashings of thick colourful paint.Colour, contrast and texture excite the painting process.Sometimes pensive, often spontaneous, I paint from the heart whilst attempting to bring some sense of order to the exploration of emotion expressed on the canvas.
In my paintings I explore the beauty of colour and texture through the medium of oil and the use of a pallet knife.Much of my work is created through a technique known as “impasto”.
The joy of using the pallet knife is that it enables me to connect with and almost sculpt and mould the paint onto the canvas.
I developed a love of art from an early age and studied art and art history at school.I have always enjoyed exploring new mediums and in more recent years have experimented with pottery, mosaic making, wood carving, papier maché, charcoal, oil pastel and acrylic.I find however that I always seem to return to my first love - oil paint.
I always have a painting in my head that I can’t wait to get on canvas. This is my first exhibition and I hope it will be the first of many.”
Take time to visit the Courtyard Gallery and view new works by Sinead.

PREVIOUSLY ‘trace’
an exhibition of drawings, paintings and prints
by Judy O’Sullivan at The Courtyard Gallery, Midleton, Co. Cork
16 – 29 September 2011, Tues – Sat10-1.30 and 2-5.30pm.Admission free
The exhibition will be formally opened by
Clare Hennessy, Director Cork Printmakers on Saturday 17th September at 2.30 pm (All welcome)
In her new work Judy O’Sullivan is experimenting with drawing processes, extending boundaries through photography and print. She focuses on familiar surroundings, a chair, a window, a shadow on a wall, something the cat brings in, footprints in mud, the patterns in hedgerows. These are the marks of everyday life, often unnoticed, to which we give little attention.
A central aspect in the making of the work was exploring the Japanese idea, ‘mono no aware’, literally ‘the pathos of things’, the awareness of their impermanence and transience and wistfulness their passing.
‘The work grew from my reflections on different aspects of my mother’s life. I tried to make use of her gift for always seeing wonder in the small, the ordinary and everyday. She kept for me things other people might have thrown out, knowing I might find magic in an old piece of lace or fabric, a feather or things that held memories.
Making a drawing holds onto the momentary experience, freezing the moment. The drawing holds our reflections and feelings making something concrete of the encounter with the object.’
Clare based artist Judy O’Sullivan grew up in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork and is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and UCC.She has exhibited regularly in solo and selected group exhibitions over the last ten years including Tallaght Community Arts Centre, Dublin; CorkArtTrail; Beara Arts Festival; Iontas at SligoArtGallery; Glór Centre, Ennis, Co Clare; Clare Co Council Offices; Wicklow Co. Council Offices. "From the Ashes" - 25th June to 8th July 2010 Exhibition by Jackie Edwards To view more images of Jackie's paintings, click here
Reading, Rivers, Dreaming Born in London of Irish parents, Jackie Edwards has lived in Rosslare, Co Wexford, for over 30 years. She attended Dun Laoghaire School of Art and has held 25 exhibitions to date.
Although she paints a wide range of subjects, she focuses mainly on figurative work and portraiture, often strong imagery using oil and egg tempera as her main medium.
The use of egg tempera and oil lends itself to a technique called The” Mische Technique”. This process uses layers of thin oil glazes which allow light though the opaque cross hatching of the tempera, resulting in an illuminated quality to the finished piece. Jackie will be furthering her studies this August in Austria under the Master Artist, Professor Phillip Rubinov Jacobson.
This exhibition features figurative and natural images that have created an impact on Jackie from the dark to lighter side of life.

"Carousels and Nature" en exhibition by Claire Smyth, Carmel Smyth and Tina Shee Cappieri 19th to 31st March 2010
Two painters and a batik artist present their joint exhibition at The Courtyard from 19th to 31st March. Tina Shee Cappieri and Clare Smyth are both graduates of the CrawfordCollege of art, who have specialized in painting. Tina’s most recent series of paintings has as its subject merry-go-rounds, to suggest the manner in which our lives often seem to go round in circles, with problems constantly repeating until we take action to resolve them. Look out for the moment of rebellion from a horse on the carousel.
Clare works mostly in watercolour, with her major source of inspiration coming from the colours, texture and light of her natural environment.
Carmel Smyth works in batik, a process involving hot wax on cloth, which is dyed several times to build up colours. She draws inspiration from the ever changing landscape. Carmel has exhibited frequently, and also taught batik to primary and secondary school children.
19th February to 8th March: "Look and See"
Opening on February 19th at 7.30 p.m. will be an exhibition by four Cork artists to watch out for: Laura Healy, Maeve Hickey, Helen O’Keeffe and Rebecca Wall. Currently in their final year at the Crawford College of Art and Design, they have joined forces to present “Look and See”,a dynamic exhibition of paintings. Part of their mission is to “reinterpret ‘real space’ in order to challenge our natural judgement in negotiating spatial relationships in environments we occupy”. Other inspirations are childhood memories, and emotional responses to colour
